Chartwells enhancing the student experience at RCSI, Dublin
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and Chartwells were awarded the accolade of “Excellence in the Provision of Professional Services” at this year’s Education Awards in Dublin. Ken Gormley, RCSI Chief Estates & Facilities Officer was on hand to pick up the award with RCSI Front of House Manager, Bryan Sheils.
For over 200 years RCSI has played a major role in medical education and training in Ireland, welcoming medical students from across the globe. Founded in 1784 to train surgeons, today the College provides extensive education and training in the healthcare professions at undergraduate and postgraduate level. RCSI recognises that not only world renowned training drives student applications but also a first-class student experience.
Maintaining a position at the leading edge of student experience is ever more challenging. The RCSI student population now numbers 3271 and is served by over a thousand staff. More than 80 countries are represented on RCSI’s international student body.
In 2017 RCSI chose to partner with Chartwells, Compass Group Ireland’s specialist education operating company, to provide an evocative and compelling on campus food culture.
RCSI may be surrounded by some of Dublin’s best restaurants and baristas, however RCSI and Chartwells are aware that the ultimate student experience is created through a thriving on campus culture which deeply connects students with their university beyond the lecture hall and skills labs. Food, and an engaging and blooming food culture, is a key ingredient. In the development of this partnership we focused on how we would create just that.
To effectively cater for the ethnic diversity of RCSI, Chartwells have created a Cultural Food Policy. This Cultural Food Policy supports the consistent delivery of offers for customers with religious dietary requirements and ensures that accurate and relevant marketing and signage allows customers to make an informed choice in all outlets.
In reimagining the food culture at RCSI for an international student body, Chartwells created an on-campus restaurant and two coffee shops to serve a wide selection of freshly-made and on trend food and drinks, including vegetarian and halal-friendly options.
The newly-opened 200-seater restaurant in the basement of 123 St Stephen’s Green, serves up a host of mouth-watering options throughout the day. Lunch choices are as varied as their students’ appetites taking inspiration from around the globe and dishing up the best in food trends of the moment .
Chartwells includes considered partnerships with major international food and drink brands so in this case Starbucks lovers don’t have to trek out of the college to find their tall, grande and venti hot drinks and snacks as these are offer on the ground floor of 26 York Street. The perfect spot for a study break around exams!
Chartwells partners with leading educational establishments in Ireland and around the World to create compelling university and college food cultures. We build new exciting food spaces that play a critical role in enhancing campus life. We leverage our worldwide experience and best practice and link this with our local passion to deliver innovative food services and bespoke solutions tailored to specific student needs.
