Heart Health
The food you eat plays a key role in maintaining your heart health. Eating a diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fibre, while limiting foods high in salt and saturated fat, can help reduce your risk of developing heart disease.
Foods that support heart health include;
Oily fish
Eating fish, especially oily fish, may reduce risk of heart disease and stroke. Aim to eat at least two portions of fish each week, including one portion of oily fish such as mackerel, salmon or trout.
Pulses
Pulses such as kidney beans, lentils and chickpeas are rich in dietary fibre, provide plant-based protein and are naturally low in fat. Incorporating pulses into your diet is a simple and effective way to help support your heart health.
Wholegrains
Research shows that increased intakes of fibre in the diet may reduce risk of heart disease. Including a variety of wholegrain and high-fibre foods, such as oats, quinoa and brown rice, can help you increase your fibre intake.
Nuts
Nuts such as almonds, walnuts and cashews are packed with fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals and heart-healthy unsaturated fats. Including a small handful of unsalted nuts as part of a balanced diet can help support heart health.
